Bobby Kinzer
Bobby Kinzer is a native of Washington, DC. Growing up on the inner city streets of Washington, DC was a task for any young man in the 70’s.
He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School (now Reed- Jackson High School) which is the alma mater of the multi-billionaire Warren Buffet.
Bobby learned the game of basketball and the hard knocks of life on Upshur Street Playground located in Northwest DC. He grew six inches in one summer to 6’5″ and started to develop an all-around game. Since he modeled his game on his basketball heroes at the time, he became a prolific point guard for his size.
You heard of BC (Before Christ) and AD (After Death) – well, Bobby was BM (Before Magic)! He made All-DC Inter-high Basketball honors, and accomplishing this feat in the 1970’s was major in a city that produced phenomenal players in that high school era who went on to play in the NBA such as Adrian Dantley (Buffalo Braves), Kenny Carr (Portland Trailblazers), Duck Williams (New Orleans Jazz), Keith Herron (Detroit Pistons), Hawkeye Whitney, (Kansas City Kings), and Jo Jo Hunter (Milwaukee Bucks).
Bobby received a four-year basketball scholarship to Penn State University. He played for a year and a quarter under the legendary John Bach (Bach left Penn State and became the Head Coach for the NBA Golden State Warriors and eventually won three NBA championships as an Assistant Coach for the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls).
But the experience of playing under Bach proved to be unnecessarily stressful. So, Bobby transferred to Texas A& I University to play under one of the most inspirational coaches and people in his life, Rich Sheubrooks. In his first year, Bobby was selected to the All Lone Star Conference Team.
An American gentleman who was a European basketball agent signed Bobby to a contract to play in Sweden. The venture led Bobby on a journey of excitement, disappointment, enlightenment and revelation. What he found was more than any game of basketball could have given him.
Bobby was able to complete his Sociology/Anthropology degree from the University of the District of Columbia between seasons. When he finished playing basketball in Europe, he was immediately hired as a Registered Stockbroker and Investment Advisory Associate for the Acacia/Calvert Group. Next he became a Liquidation Specialist for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the corporation that regulates and insures over $9 trillion of the United States of America’s banks.
Bobby retired in 2017 as a Senior Community Affairs Specialist for the FDIC. In that position, he traveled the United States and promoted and taught the importance of financial education to corporations, organizations, communities, and families.
Bobby received the prestigious national award for community service called the Nancy K Rector Award. Currently, he is the President of the Literacy Institute for Financial Enrichment (LIFE) that teaches financial literacy and education to youth, young adults, adults and senior citizens across America. He is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and a Certified Financial Education Instructor.
